When to Floss

We all know we are suppose to brush and floss our teeth twice a day. This helps to keep our teeth clean and healthy. If you don’t have the time, you should still brush them at least once a day. Some though have asked which way is better, to brush first or to floss first? Both have their own theoretical benefits, but in the end either way will greatly benefit your dental health.

This is not to say the matter can’t be argued. Some dentist claim that flossing before brushing is the best way to go. When we floss we remove food particles and anything else that may be hiding between our teeth. When we brush, we can wipe these particles away and the toothpaste is able to seep deeper between our teeth. This allows for a deeper cleaning and more access to our gums.

On the other side, some dentist say it is better to floss afterwards. The idea being that brushing can clean the surface, but also push some food particles and foreign agents deeper between our teeth. Flossing gets these particles out that the toothbrush missed.

Either way, the important thing is that brushing and flossing are done together. You won’t get the full clean, and therefore the full benefit of a healthy mouth just doing one or the other. Remember to also replace your toothbrush every three months or so, and never reuse floss. The key to a healthy smile begins at home. Regular appointments with your dentist are also essential, so schedule a check-up with either of the Ormond Beach dentists Dr. Costello and Drake today.
