The field of cosmetic dentistry these days has become very advanced and developed. There are intricate, detailed, yet complex procedures, charted out for providing a solution to all your dental challenges – even Periodontitis.

Periodontitis or pyorrhea is a series of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium, which is the medical term used for the tissues that envelop the teeth. Periodontitis includes the progressive damage of the alveolar bone, and if left untreated, it can lead to serious damage by causing the gradual loosening and subsequent loss of teeth. It’s this damage and loss of teeth which leads to the need for cosmetic dentistry.

Periodontitis is mainly caused by microorganisms that stick to and grow on the surface of teeth, along with an excessively aggressive immune reaction against these microorganisms.

The 1999 classification system for periodontal diseases and conditions enumerated seven main classifications of periodontal diseases, out of which the last six are labeled as destructive because the damage and impairment caused, is essentially irrevocable. The seven classifications are as follows:

  • Gingivitis
  • Chronic periodontitis
  • Aggressive periodontitis
  • Periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease
  • Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis/periodontitis
  • Abscesses of the periodontium
  • Combined periodontics-endodontic lesions

In the premature stages, periodontitis has very little symptoms and in many cases, the disease progresses significantly before patients seek treatment. Symptoms may include swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath and metallic taste and even loose teeth in later stages.

Poor oral hygiene is considered the main cause for periodontitis. Smoking is also considered another contributing factor.
In cases of periodontitis, cosmetic dentistry serves as a boon. There are various procedures which include dental implants, veneers, bone grafting, dental crown lengthening and ridge augmentation- all of which will help make the condition of the patient better.

There are major surgeries also that can help in this. Surgery allows access for deep cleaning of the root surface, removal of diseased tissue, and repositioning and shaping of the bones, gum, and tissues supporting the teeth. Surgical procedures vary depending on the individual diagnosis and needs of the patient.
